MOTHER TERESA

Pearl of the Day: Simple Wish, Another's Bliss

Oprah has said the pearl “biology is the least of what makes someone a mother.”

So what does? Is it the familiar face, the gentle embrace, the shoulder to cry on, the smack on the ass, the hand that feeds you, the last one in the room waiting for you, the one who kisses your boo boos, makes your wishes come true, remembers your birthday, I would say that it is, and more.

Women give birth time and again throughout our lifetime, whether to biological babies, a project and even ourselves with our various developmental stages. Each birthing creates a new baby to protect, nurture and help evolve.

The art and spirit of giving is innately built in women’s chromosomes, heck our bodies were designed to give the ultimate gift – that of life to another person! Yet, this gift is not just physiological. Women manifest wonders and undertake humanitarian causes, jobs and projects with great dedication and passion. By extension, this creates the greatest mothers of mankind.

Oprah has millions of daughters. Mother Teresa had millions of children.

Mother Teresa seems like a fictional character yet was the simplest meager person. A part of her spirit resonates within us all, a desire to reach out and help someone less fortunate and throw ourselves into the pits, in her case the slums, with reckless abandon save for the desire to help and heal the aching hearts of others. Mother Theresa did not have biological children yet she opened her arms to the world’s children that society turned away to become the Great mother.

Mother Theresa I am not.

I remember in college during Greek Week we had to raise money for the sponsored charity - the Special Olympics. We raised the money by canning in the streets and asking strangers for change. Very un-Apprentice like. I did this for about an hour, left and did what any noble creature would do, I wrote a check in the amount of my individual goal. I did not like “begging”.

To my horror, my check bounced! Let me repeat, I bounced a check to the Special Olympics. Oye, this will bar my entry through the pearly gates for sure. As I re-wrote the check I realized I had better pay closer to attention and be more mindful of my so-called altruistic acts. I greatly misconstrued “begging”.

Once upon a time you believed in the magic of a birthday wish. It had to come true. Once a year you close your eyes and wish for anything you so desired. There are some wishes that are so powerful, like wishing upon a star or at 11:11.

Parents are often the gatekeepers to fulfilling their children's wishes. We can also choose to fulfill the wishes of the world’s children. Those in search of a familiar face, good night kiss, a home, a decent meal, a birthday party...

This birthday, make a birthday wish for yourself – after all it’s your birthday – but take another breath and make a global wish. The power of intent is so great that small thoughts, particularly powerful birthday wishes will magically change the world. True mothers can hold this space for the world, like Mother Earth, the ultimate Mother who gives so much yet wishes for so little in return.

Through service we develop an inner aspect to ourselves while helping others – the ultimate gift of motherhood. Honor the Great Mother within you for all those whom you have helped, even if unknowingly, you never know how the simplest act or smallest gesture can uplift another and be thankful for those who return it in kind!
