HEART STRINGS

Pearl of the Day: Love, the River Wild

I’ve been thinking of this pearl “life’s sweetest moments ignite the heart”. The simplest moments that overflow with meaning and love.

In these moments your heart and being flash wide open. Your guard is down and you are in your highest self. The process of connecting with my family is something I crave.

I so enjoy hearing stories about my ancestry. This always fully captures my attention and opens up my whole being.
To know where it is we came from and how the lot we inherited is a key cue to ourselves and our innate interests and inclinations.

Sometime in college, I realized I more enjoyed spending time with my family more than going out with my friends. This was a big one for me. I grew up and recognized my family as not just my obligatory place in the world but as truly my home.

We’d sit up well into the night just chatting away. Then one by one we’d hit the hay. Usually my dad would be the first to throw in the towel, then my sister. My mom and I would be left and usually we’d stay awake talking for hours. I love that time with my mom and we’d cover just about every single topic under the sun and beyond.

My sister, who is younger and has a slight complex, used to think my mom and I would wait for her to go to sleep so we can start having the real fun.

In a way she was right. During those talks, we’ve cured all the world’s problems.

We talk about all the characters in our family and their history. Like my great grandfather who was supposed to hitch a ride from Europe to America on the Titanic. Luckily, he missed the boat. Tragically, his cousin who was expecting his arrival in America, dropped dead of a heart attack upon hearing of the ill fate of the Titanic.

This story strikes such a nerve. What dumb luck runs through my veins???

My daughter who is a toddler has begun shifting her bedtime rituals. Now she stays up pretty late. My son is usually the first to sleep. Next, my husband. Then my daughter and I are up into the early morning hours.

I shared this with my mom and said mom, “we’re going to be having those all night late night chats.” My mom just smiled and said, “call me!”

When she is ready I will share the family stories with her. There are some traditions that will live on. I have no doubt that during those talks with my daughter, we will continue to cure the world of its problems and more so that she’ll go out and do it!!

The process of connecting with my family is something I crave. It fulfills me more than a hot fudge brownie sundae!!
