Pearl of the film: Fools Gold

I remember turning the pages of  F. Scott Fitzgerald's literary classic "The Great Gatsby" in high school but didn't recall much of it as I passed the flapper girls at the Gold Coast Film Festival's pre-screening of Baz Lurhmann's cinematic spin on "Gatsby" in the newly refurbished Soundview Cinemas in Port Washington.

Gatsby illuminates Fitzgerald's pearl “No amount of fire or freshness can challenge what a man will store up in his ghostly heart.”

For when you lose your true love, especially a golden girl like Daisy Buchanan, sharply portrayed by Carrey Mulligan, your heart is haunted with memories of the past and pain of an empty future.

Pearl of the Day: Baby steps are actually big leaps.

A client of mine proffers the pearl that when faced with life’s next phase take the jump off the mountain and throw yourself off it whole heartedly.

This brings up another pearl from Gay Hendricks, a business partner of mine, which is that we often set limits on ourselves as to what success we can have.

Pearl of the Picture: Love Conquers Primal Fears

In our modern world we forget what it takes to just survive and the pearl of DreamWork's animated feature film "The Croods" is to remind us to "come out of the dark and into the light."

Can you imagine living with your family in Caveman times? I can.

Pearl of the Week: Let it Go

This time of year when spring awakens the earth, easter bunnies cross our paths and Passover sparks the pearl "everything that is old must be let go for there is a greater power at work."

The Passover story brings out my 'Mo'ses complex in a major way.

Moses was born one way, a slave, abandoned to fate to be drawn from the river Nile to be raised the polar opposite way, as a prince.

Pearl of the week: A Breath of Life

The world just got smaller and Washington Irving's pearl, "there is a sacredness in tears. They are not the mark of weakness, but of power. They speak more eloquently than ten thousand tongues. They are messengers of overwhelming grief... and unspeakable love" are streaming down my face.

With the holiday lights twinkling in the night sky, the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting burns brightly in my mind.

Pearl of the Week: Know Your Center

Dreamwork's "Rise of the Guardians" conjures the Ancient Greek pearl "know thyself" in order to believe in yourself.

For everything else is just layers of who you are but what is at your core will guide you towards your purpose in this life. It is only there that you follow the Shakespearean pearl and be true to yourself ("to thine own self be true"). Once connected with your purpose, your life will flow truly north.

Pearl of the Week: Nature's Law

This time of year gratitude is the buzz word yet post-Sandy it's become a lifestyle to heed C.S. Lewis's pearl "miracles, do not, in fact, break the laws of nature."

Impending Storm

When news warned that Sandy was coming under a Scorpio full moon, the emails from the Office of Emergency Management streamed in and the post-traumatic stress of Irene returned.

ROASTED HERB (aka “CHICKEN BONES”) & HIS GIRLS (VEGES)

By: Cynthia Litman

A country table is only comforting if its welcoming and shared with great company. Fall brings me to my roots and my mom’s favorite dish to make is chicken. She always felt like having “chicken tonight” and makes it a million different ways.  I’ve since found my groove with the versatile bird as well.

I love everything about the fall season. The sights, the colors and the bounty of the harvest. The fall foods warm up your belly and roots your soul back into itself as it prepares for colder days ahead. It finds me feeling inspired to eat it all up.

Pearl of the Series: High Marks

When Gabrielle Bernstein first suggested that I host groups, a rush of fear came through me.

"Can I do that????"

All the doubts, insecurities, hesitations about not being credible enough to do it crept in and all the things I AM came into mind - lawyer/momma/wife/Reiki master/loving being - along with everything I AM NOT - therapist/Oprah/Guru.
